Clark Gregg will be returning to the role of one Phil Coulson in the forthcoming instalment, and he’ll be digitally de-aged about 25 years in the process. Speaking with EW, he let us know a little bit of what we’re in for when we meet a much earlier version of his SHIELD agent.
“He’s a relatively new SHIELD agent who is obsessed with MC Hammer and dresses just like him, and it makes Director Fury so angry,” Gregg said. “The genie pants don’t really go with the Armani.”
Is he joking? We sincerely hope not.
“There was something really special about going back to the early days when he was just kind of coming up the ranks,” Gregg added. “I had to take innocence workshops and go back to when he was a little less crusty and jaded!”
Back in Jon Favreau’s first Iron Man film, Agent Coulson told Tony Stark that the billionaire’s superhero hi-jinx weren’t his first rodeo. Gregg still isn’t keen to reveal if the events of Captain Marvel are, though.
“This might be the rodeo. It’s one of them, for sure,” he teased, before confirming that the highly anticipated film will show us the first “meet-cute moment” between Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
The recent batch of first look Captain Marvel images released by EW didn’t feature any pictures of the younger version of Gregg’s Agents of SHIELD character, but he seems pretty confident that computer wizardry will do a bang-up job of suspending our disbelief.
“When I got the call saying they wanted to do this and have Coulson be in this 90s world, they said, ‘Do you have a trainer?’” he joked. “People don’t know this but Robert Downey is actually 71. So they’ve been doing that for him in all of these movies.”
Captain Marvel is due in cinemas on March 8th, 2019. The full schedule of Marvel movies can be found here.
