With Disney releasing one film a year, Dave Filoni talked about the potential for another animated Star Wars film in the future.
Filoni has been involved with Star Wars animation since The Clone Wars, which is set to return on the Disney streaming service. Filoni recently completed his first project since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, Star Wars Rebels. The Clone Wars and Rebels have become fan favorites among Star Wars fans. Filoni directed the first theatrical animated Star Wars film released in 2008, which consisted of the first The Clone Wars arc. He sat down with Comic Book.com and spoke about the possibility of another Star Wars animated feature film in the future:
“I think the one thing that we’ve been able to achieve with the Star Wars animation we’ve done is that the people, the fans really accept it as part of the story, and the medium doesn’t matter to the vast majority of them. Where sometimes people look at animation and think of it as something other, or something different than the rest of the story.”
Filoni also talked about what it’s like working in Lucasfilm with people who have been working on Star Wars films since the original trilogy:
“George always treated the animation we did as part of his story, and he was just telling it with this different paintbrush now. I think the fans have really latched on to that, but I think it’s something that we’ve done, and we’ve tried to challenge ourselves to be great and push ourselves to try to meet that high level of the Star Wars films, dating all the way back to the originals. And when I see Dennis Muren in the hallway walking by, or Bill George, or any of the team that’s worked on the originals, or John Knoll, who’s worked on the prequels, I feel the responsibility to all of them. You know, Lynne Hale. Howard Roffman, when he was here. The legacy employees. That we continue to tell great stories, and make them high quality in Star Wars because that’s what we’ve always tried to do as a company.”
Filoni worked on the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender before he moved onto The Clone Wars. Many fans are hoping Filoni takes on a live-action Star Wars film next and he spoke about his transition from 2D to computer animated:
“It’s been great for me, and I never thought I’d do computer animation. I started in 2D, so my world has just kind of grown and grown, and it’s all thanks to being a part of Lucasfilm, really.”
Star Wars Resistance is the next animated series from Lucasfilm and will feature appearances by Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, with Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie reprising their roles. The series will also feature the voice cast of Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (DuckTales), Jim Rash (Community), and Rachel Butera (Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time).
Star Wars Resistance premieres on Disney XD in the Fall.
